The Men's Shed

Excerpt from Wikipedia

"Men's sheds or community sheds are non-profit local organizations that provide a space for craftwork and social interaction. The movement originated in Australia around the 1980s as a way to improve the health and wellbeing of older men. However some have expanded their remit to anyone regardless of age or gender, and have similar aims and functions to hackerspaces. There are over 900 located across Australia, with thousands of active members. Men's sheds can also be found in the United Kingdom, ...Ireland, United States, Canada, Finland, New Zealand and Greece.  The slogan for men's sheds is "Shoulder To Shoulder", shortened from "Men don't talk face to face, they talk shoulder to shoulder", adopted after the 2008 Australian Men's Shed Association (AMSA) conference. The users of men's sheds are known as "shedders"."

Men's Shed Evolution.

Men's sheds have expanded to include women not just men, all ages not just old, and broad activities not just workshop or wood working.  Some men's sheds are more community sheds.  For example, Aloha Community Shed's priority is giving back to community and running projects in groups and teams.  We're not just a place for individuals to work on a personal project.  We encourage socializing, sharing, interactions and relaxing together with a bit of education mixed in. Activities include volunteering in community projects like making picnic benches for schools, a garden bench for the senior center, garden clean-up for the Homeless Veteran group, working together with the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset with support of The Home Depot. Other ideas include music jam night, games night, senior stretching exercises, tours around town, beach clean-up, building raised-bed for gardens, community service, and the ideas keep coming. There's already a weekly Thursday Lunch Bunch and a monthly Sausage Sizzle/Pot Luck Lunch scheduled. Keep an eye on the events page for more happenings.
